Vale Leonard Herbert (1928 – 2018)
The Association would like to pay tribute to Patron and Life Member of the Association, Mr. Leonard Herbert, who passed away on Wednesday December 5, 2018.
Len had a long history in greyhound racing, joining the Association in 1962. Working at the Richmond Greyhound Club through the late 70s, Len operated as a track curator, kennel supervisor, and track all-rounder. Training dogs himself, Len lived for greyhound racing, even volunteering his time to assist with the construction of the Penrith track.
Len was a foundation member of the Richmond Branch, until moving to the Northern Rivers District in 1984, where he joined the Lismore Branch. From 1985 to 1997, Len served as the Lismore Branch Secretary, as well as the Chairman of the Lismore Sub-Committee from 1990 to its cessation in 1996.
In 1990, Len was elected as a Director of the NSW GBOTA, elevating to Deputy Chairman in 1998, holding this position until his resignation in May 2001. During his period of service as a Director, Len served on the Association’s Executive, Finance Sub-Committee, acted as a Delegate to the TAB GRC (NSW) and Deputy Chairman of deFax Sporting Publications.
Len’s long service to the Association was rewarded with Life Membership in 2000. His significant contribution to the Association and standing amongst the membership led the Board of Directors to appoint Len as a Patron of the Association in January 2014.
The Association acknowledges the incredible contribution made by Len, he will be greatly missed.
A funeral will be held for Len on Friday 14th December, 11am in the Rose Chapel, Palmdale Lawn Cemetery and Memorial Park, Palmdale Road, Palmdale.
